WHAT IT’S ABOUT: A
trippy story about a little kid, his troubled mother, and a mysterious elderly couple told without traditional
dialogue (a stipulation in the class assignment for which this film
was made). It has a feel of The Sixth Sense mated with The
Shining on some level.
This was Richard’s best-known
student film short, made in 1996 while he was still attending USC.
It won first prize at the James River Festival of the Moving Image held at Virginia Commonwealth University (Richmond, Virginia) in 1997.. It also played at a few other film festivals around the country, giving people their first glimpse of things to come from Richard Kelly. The Goodbye Place hasn’t been released to
the public on video or theatrically, so you won’t find a copy
down at your local blockbuster. It is possible that Richard may include it as an extra on a future DVD movie release, but that is just speculation.
Trivia:
:: Actress Staci Greason played the part of the mother. She had previously
appeared on the soap Days of Our Lives.
:: Aaron, the little boy, was played by George Shrouder.
:: Even with virutally no budget, the film still contains some limited visual effects.
